Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be a serious concern. Just because STI’s are common doesn’t mean they’re no big deal.

Left untreated, infections can cause irreversible damage to your reproductive system. STIs can pass onto newborns during childbirth if the mother is infected and remains untreated.

STIs & STDs: What are they?

An STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) is an infection that does not show any physical signs or symptoms. It is contracted from another infected person through sexual activity, including vaginal, oral, and anal sex and skin-to-skin contact. It becomes an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) when symptoms appear. It is important to remember that not all infected people will have signs or symptoms. The problem is that some of these STDs can cause a lot of damage and can be passed to your partner without your knowledge. You do not have to have symptoms to be contagious; you can spread the disease any time you engage in sexual behavior.

Sex and Relationships:

The decision to have sex is a very important one, and there are lots of things to think about. Sexual relationships affect your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Whether you are considering sexual activity, or you have already had sex, there are important risks to consider. Using birth control or condoms won’t guarantee that you won’t get pregnant or contract an STI, nor will they protect you from heartbreak. The only sure way to avoid these problems is to wait for sex. Wait until you are in a long-term, committed relationship with one healthy partner, such as in marriage. Married people live longer, healthier, more secure, and sexually satisfying lives. Think about it.

Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted infections in the United States. Any sexually active person can be infected with Chlamydia. The greater the number of sex partners, the greater the risk of infection. Because the cervix of teenage girls and young women is not fully matured, they are at particularly high risk for infection.

In women, symptoms of Gonorrhea are often mild, but most women who are infected have no symptoms. Even when a woman has symptoms, they can be mistaken for a bladder or vaginal infection. Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems.
